SAG-AFTRA Actors/Writers’ Strike Thoughts

Here are some of my thoughts about the SAG-AFTRA actors/writers strike.

From EW:

The nearly 160,000 members of SAG-AFTRA are on strike.

On Thursday, the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), the union that represents all performers on film and television, announced its national board voted unanimously to launch the guild’s first strike. The news was unveiled by SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher (yes, The Nanny star) and National Executive Director & Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland during a press conference, following the expiration of the union’s current contract and a 12-day extension of contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Pictures and Television Producers (AMPTP).

Actors are going on strike because…

It seems like the actors are on strike for contract negotiations, residuals, AI using new technology to scan actors’ likeness without permission, salaries for guest stars, background actors, costars. Also, the cost of living is high, what with inflation prices rising!

My thoughts

As a writer myself, I understand needing the right to be able to make a livable wage. Even though I’m a novelist, book blogger and poet, and not a screenwriter, I still support and relate to the actors and writers advocating for their work. Every creative person, whether it’s an actor, writer, director, producer, crew member, deserves to make their fair share of money. Most people don’t understand that the 1% of famous actors like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Denzel Washington, Angela Bassett, etc. those actors make the bulk of the rich money. If an actor or writer is not the top 1-2%, they’re pretty much working paycheck to paycheck.

Even me, as a writer, I’m working paycheck to paycheck, between my blog, poetry book, freelance projects, contract work, and volunteer work. It’s not easy living out your dream, especially when you’re struggling. It’s not impossible, though.

Hopefully, this strike will work out the way it’s supposed to be for everyone involved.
