I’ve become obsessed with Tyla’s self-titled debut album since it dropped in March!
My niece Aniya was actually the one who put me on Tyla because she was curious about her other music besides her hit single, “Water”. I don’t know that much about Tyla’s journey or where she came from; I know she’s from South Africa, but that’s about it. But I do know that I’m obsessed with these songs from her album.
Safer – I fell in love with this song the minute I’d heard it! I love the lyrics about feeling safer to run away from your feelings rather than facing them. I’ve felt that way before; I’ve felt the need to run away from what I really needed rather than face them.
No. 1 ft. Tems – I love this collaboration with fellow African queen Tems! I also like the self-empowering lyrics about not relying on anyone to make what you want happen. Not relying on a man/partner to make you happy. Put yourself first!!
Breathe Me – This song sounds so good in the car, with the wind flying in your hair, top down, the sun shining, driving on the road. I love how Tyla’s voice sounds so breathy on the chorus. She makes the song sound so effortless and beautiful. I also like the post-chorus: Inhale harder, wanna feel your heartbeart louder / Take you higher, we can go where you wanna, na-na. That part is so catchy!!
