Created by Rukky @ Eternity Books & Dani @ Literary Lion, Let’s Talk Bookish is a segment where discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts. Posts are written on Friday’s.

This week’s prompt: What do you do when a book triggers you? (Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

Let’s Talk Bookish prompts: Everyone has different reactions to triggers; what is yours? Do you have measures in place to help you avoid books that could potentially trigger you? If you get triggered without previously knowing there would be a trigger, do you still care to finish the book? Does it affect your eventual rating/review? Have you ever read a book knowing that something within it would trigger you?

I can’t read anything with horror or gore because it makes me really panicky and I start having nightmares about those characters. Anxiety and panic attacks are some things I go through. If I get triggered without knowing, I have to calm myself down before deciding whether I want to read again. It’ll affect my overall rating because reading is an experience. Reading should put you in the most comfortable space, and if it doesn’t, then I’ll feel it.

Luckily, in most recent years, I haven’t been triggered by any books I’ve read. But that’s because I stick to old favorites that I know are okay for me to read. Or, I’ll try something new with the trigger warnings in mind, like rape or murder. All in all, it’s important to know your triggers so you’ll know which things you can enjoy or watch out for.

Aw that’s an awful experience indeed.. we sure don’t want our reading to make us feel like that. Thanksfully it hasn’t happened recently – hopefully you can keep going on that stance 💕

Hi Kristina! Yeah not my best experience. Good for you too that it hasn’t happened for you either. 💜

I personally don’t find myself triggered by content in book but I’m a huge believer in books CARRYING trigger warnings. I’ve seen authors who actually say they won’t warn readers, so I refuse to read them on principle!

    • Yes, I’m a huge supporter of trigger warnings too. They’re super important. I don’t understand why some authors won’t put them in their books, especially controversial topics!
