My Spoiler-Free Review
In a Nutshell: DNF at 80%, even though I could have finished this book sooner because I have so little left to read, but I just couldn’t anymore.
The characters were flat, the only one I liked was Ava, and even she got on my nerves because she was so angry all of the time! I understood why she was angry because she lost her entire family to a witch who had lost control of her powers on their home country Vian. But still, taking it out on Cassidy, who is the daughter of the witch, isn’t fair. Especially when Cassidy barely knows about what it means to be a Behesian. I really could have done without all of the Darrien POV chapters, because his character was so tough all of the time; he never let his guard down, even around his friends. Milan was ok, when he wasn’t with Ava. I won’t spoil for what happens to him, but there were moments where I’d felt like he could have been a better character if he wasn’t trying so hard to appease Ava, who was his girlfriend.
The world-building behind the Behesians and Vian was confusing. These witch/wizard-knockoffs have specialized abilities, and clearly they got them from Vian. But why did they have them? What enemies did they have? What were they fighting for? How did Vian help support their powers, and how did Cassidy’s mother destroy that? All the characters kept talking about Cassidy’s mother destroying Vian, but didn’t explain how or why. Yes, she had lost control, but how did it happen? The plot barely addressed that and depended too much on Cassidy’s faded memories and dreams to tell the reader.
