Disney Cover Bands, Crazy Rich Asians, and Publishing | AUGUST 2018 WRAP-UP

In Real Life (IRL)

This month has been nothing but work, work, and more work. I barely had time to read anything, much less post. That’s why I haven’t been posting much lately. But I did find time to enjoy my life a little bit. I attended a Meetup movie and dinner event to see Crazy Rich Asians, which was a lot of fun. The movie was so cute and adorable and funny! I’m more excited that I got to support another diverse book to movie adaptation.

I also got to hang out with my best friend Kim and her friend Jacqui to go bar-hopping and see The Little Mermen, a popular Disney cover band in Asbury Park. They were a lot of fun, and the best part was getting to know Jacqui, who is also a fellow BTS ARMY member!! We introduced Kim to some of BTS’ songs, so we hope she joins in the club too.

[NEWS] The Change of My Blog Name

Perhaps the biggest surprise on my blog is the change of my domain name from Poemsbyayoungartist to PoetryBooksYA.

I felt that after 4 years of staying within the old domain name, I was holding myself back a bit. I had changed my blog layout earlier this year but had kept the old domain name because it had been with me since the beginning. But now that my layout has been stapled in, I felt that it’s time for my brand name to become its own.

DISCUSSION: Is a Dream Job in Publishing Possible in 2018?

Another news update was my discussion post on making it in publishing industry. I didn’t get much traction with it, but it was good to let off some steam I had been feeling for the past year.

If you don’t have a certain number of followers, have those specific connections with certain publishers or authors, then what happens? What if this is all you know and all you have spent so much time on, only to find little growth and opportunity?

This identity crisis also rides into this dilemma, and it affects my personal relationships. There are people in my life who mean well, they say they support me, but don’t know how to. So I have to find outside resources and things just to feel like I’m doing something right.

Book Review Tour: ‘Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced’ by R.J. Garcia

After months of putting it off, I finally wrote my spoiler-free review of Nocturnal Meetings of the Misplaced. I found the book to be really interesting, about a teen boy who moves to a new town with his little sister and meets a group of misfit kids in the woods. They start having secret meetings and then discover some secrets about their town.

Weekly Prompts

State of the ARC – I added a new prompt to my weekly regimen but this one is monthly. State of the ARC is created by Avalinah @ AvalinahsBooks, which describes reading updates for advanced reader’s copies.

Book Blogger Hop – I only did 2 Book Blogger Hop’s this month, but they were worth it because I got to write about my favorite book bloggers and why I read. I felt like they centered me back to why I started the weekly prompts in the first place.

Top 5 Wednesday – T5W was interesting this month, what with so many people going back to school. There were many features that described topics like Books for Classes, and Books I Love with Tropes I “Hate”.

IHeart Characters Meme – I only participated in one IHCM, but it was the cutest one, because it was about adopting Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon. Dani from Perspectives of a Writer loved my idea, as well as Lauren from Books & Geekiness
