TOP TEN TUESDAY #32: Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book

Hosted by Jamie, Jana and Lauren of BrokeandBookish.com, Top Ten Tuesdays is a weekly book meme that presents top ten lists on Tuesdays that promotes favorite bookish themes.
This week’s theme:

April 18: Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly Want To Read A Book (topic originally done back in 2013 as top ten words/topics that will make me instantly want to read a book) — so yeah basically any topic or theme or ANYTHING (ie if X person recommends it) that will make you instantly want to pick up a book. My list will likely be called Jamie-bait because there are soooo certain things you can say in a summary or a review that will just instantly draw me to it!

10. An interesting synopsis. Yeah, it’s the most typical of first topics, but if an author’s synopsis is exciting and interesting enough to read, I’ll read it!

9. A cool cover! – I know you shouldn’t “judge a book by it’s cover”, but we all do it anyway! At least I do. If the cover is beautiful, haunting, artistic, or all of the above, I’ll most likely want to check it out. I also like simple covers too, because those are where the story itself is good.

8. A badass female main character – Most of the stories I love involve a badass, fierce, tough, powerful female main character. Especially one who can stand up with or against the male lead character. So if there’s a woman or girl in it, odds are I’ll be looking for her personality traits and actions to be fierce!

7. Setting – If the setting is based in a city or state that’s relatable or fast-paced, then I’ll want to read it. Especially if it’s based in NJ, because that’s my homestate.

6. If it’s marked as a trilogy or duology – A lot of the books I read are apart of series, whether it’s a duology (a series of 2 books), or a trilogy (3 books). With the exception of Harry Potter and Twilight, I’m finding myself to like series that end within 2 or 3 books. It’s just easier to deal with than 6-8 books within one world.

5. If it’s blurbed by an author I know/love – I don’t desperately depend on authors’ recommendations on what to read. But if I was in the mood for something new, I’d go to my faves and see what books they’d blurbed on the cover. It shows what taste in books they have.

4. Magic/Fantasy – I’m not a huge fantasy fan, but if the magic system and world-building makes sense and is relatable, then I can dig it!

3. Humor – If a book can make me laugh, I’m all in!

2. A classic retelling – I’ve only read a few retellings and they’ve all been great reads.

1. Character Development – If the main character has come across to the end of a book with a better self-esteem, growth, intellect, or just becomes a good friend, then I can get behind the book.

Those are the top things that will instantly make me want to read a book. What are some of your choices? Let’s discuss in the comments below.
