#T5W Top 5 Wednesdays (July 27): Most Unlikable Characters

Hey guys! This is a new feature I joined from Goodreads’ Top 5 Wednesdays, a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

Created by Lainey from GingerReadsLainey and now hosted by Samantha from ThoughtsonTomes, this week’s entry describes the top 5 characters I love to hate!

July 27th: Most Unlikable Characters
— NOT VILLAINS! These are protagonists or side characters that are unlikable! (These should lean more towards characters who aren’t intentionally unlikeable. Not villains, or mean girl/guys, etc.)

5. Under My Skin by Laura Diamond

I’m currently reading this now, and finding both Adam and Darby’s parents so insufferable towards their children, but for different reasons. Adam’s mother is especially afraid for him to get anything for himself because he has a bad heart. And even after he gets a heart transplant for a better one, his parents still won’t leave him alone. He needs to become his own person without his parents hounding over him. As for Darby’s parents, they just don’t seem to know what to do with her. They want to help but when Darby tries to open up, they shut her down. For parents who claim they’re their for their children, they don’t act like it.

4. Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

I couldn’t get through to Sophie Ironwood. She’s supposed to be an ally to protagonists Etta and Nicholas, but I found her to be very whiney, arrogant and rude. Etta was the same way too, a little bit, but at least you can root for her on her journey. With Sophie, I just wanted to read past whatever annoying thing she had to say. No wonder I only read half of the book…

3. Love, Rosie by Cecelia Ahern

Rosie got on my nerves in this story, to the point where I just stopped reading the book. She didn’t realize that her best friend was in love with her, left school, got pregnant by some dude at her senior prom, resented having her daughter, and a whole bunch of stuff. I just didn’t like her at all.

2. Ignite the Shadows by Ingrid Seymour

As much as I loved all the characters in this book, I really didn’t like the team leader, James. At first, he seemed like this all-knowing leader, but what kind of leader tells their newest teammate next to nothing when she enters a new world? A world she’s always been in, but just never knew it? What kind of leader tells her to hide the majority of their powers if they’re meant to save the world from these Electric demons called Eklyptors?

1. Closed Set by Julia Harlow

Words cannot explain how much the main characters, Cassandra and Christopher, pissed me off. Cassandra tries to stay professional in their working relationship, but it doesn’t last long. 20% into the book, and they’re already in love and f*cking all over the place, declaring their love for each other. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE love and the way it does to characters, but when you’ve barely met the person and you’re already head over heels and fcking, something’s a bit off there.
First of all, I have a problem with Christopher and his always-jealous attitiude towards Cassandra and other men. Even when she looks at another man, not even in a romantic sort of way, more conversational, Christopher gets so angry and dominated and they get into a fight and break it off. But then he comes crawling back to her in need and desperation for her to forgive him. I personally think Chris is a weak character overall.
That leads me into Cassandra’s character. Hers is even more of a downward slope because I was so down with her staying professional and cordial towards Chris in the beginning, but as soon as they started f*cking, she immediately deserts her best friend, her business, and her goals to run her own business. It’s not only until Chris breaks up with her the third time that she remembers that she wants to go back home to start her own studio. Like GIRL are you serious!? Ugh…
I could go on and on, but I’ll stop there.
