For this week, we’ll be doing something a little different. I was offered to do a guest post for Jayati from Its Just A Coffee Addicted Bibliophile, in exchange for her to do one for my blog. She’s a fellow book blogger and reader from India, and she’s just the cutest thing! Her topic of choice for today is discussing her top favorite books with queer characters. Take it away, Jayati!
Hey everyone! This is Jayati, and if you know anything at all about me, you should know I absolutely love reading books which have queerness in them and so making this list was one of the hardest things I have done – because how does one choose?! But, I have tried to, so here we go!
M/M ROMANCE
Aristotle and Dante Discover The Secrets of The Universe
By Benjamin Alire Sáenz
This book follows two teenagers in the 1980s as they try to figure out their identity.
I loved reading this book – it was a heartwarming journey of two boys figuring out their sexual identity and falling in love. It was a deep and meaningful novel that really helped me (as a teen) and I think it is a book that everyone, especially teens, need to read. The book contains pain and confusion and the feeling of aloneness and not belonging, but also shows how you can be loved and cared for and feel happy.
How to be Remy Cameron
By Julain Winters
How to be Remy Cameron follows the journey of a queer teen in Georgia as he tries to figure out his identity after his english teacher gives him an assignment to write about his identity.
This book was another very important coming-of-age book with a teenage boy figuring out who you are, what your labels are and how you define yourself. I loved following the journey of Remy, seeing all the various facets that seem to define him and learning along with him, who he really was.
F/F ROMANCE
Tell Me How You Really Feel
By Animah Mae Safi
This book follows two girls who are forced to work together and fall in love.
This book was such a cute enemies to lovers romance following two girls as they fell in love. It was one of the sweetest and cutest books I’ve read, with a little drama and a lot of fluff and feelings!
Priory of the Orange Tree
By Samantha Shannon
This is one of my favourite books ever, for two reasons – dragons and sapphic romance. I loved Sabran and Ead and oh god, the entire slow burn relationship which had me on the edge of my seat. I also loved the court politics and the way that religion factored into this book and how it led to the final war. I have to admit though, I think the final battle was a little anticlimactic in the sense that I’d have loved to read a bit more about it.
The Henna Wars
By Adiba Jaigirdar
Another cute enemies to lovers sapphic romance with a competition over henna stalls and with a cute desi(bangadeshi) MC. I love the varied representation in this book and especially, how culture played a big factor in it.
Asexual spectrum
Let’s Talk about love
By Claire Kann
I read this book a while ago and fell in love with it! It had a great depiction of asexuality and what it can mean to be it. I absolutely loved the MC and the slow burn relationship and the setting – a library!
Loveless By Alice Oseman
I’m currently reading this and absolutely loving it! It really helps me understand what one goes through when they’re questioning being on the ace spectrum, because I am, and it really empowers me to think and try and understand and feel less alone. Especially for folks who aren’t on the ace spectrum, I think this book would be a great entry point to see what ace people may feel like and try to understand them!
