What Have I Been Up To? Here’s Some Books I’m Currently Reading

Since it’s been a while since my last post, and it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me in general, I thought it’d be fun to showcase the books I’m currently reading. There’s no telling when exactly I’ll finish and review each of these books, but I’ll talk about them anyway.
Before we get to the books, let me just say I hope everyone is staying safe at home, or work if you can’t get out of it. Also, I hope my Black brothers and sisters are staying safe too, and hopeful and strong that this fight for racial injustice and social change.

The Chosen Ones by Lisa Luciano | 20% done

I received an ARC version of this book by the author’s PR manager, Arden Izzo, and it’s pretty good so far. I’d initially thought the ’90s skating references would throw me off, but it hasn’t. I’m mostly reading to see who the culprit is.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones | Progress: Page 49

I’m reading this for Roxie Reads Book Club’s July read on Patreon, and it’s so sad and interesting at the same time. I believe in Black Love more than anything, but why does the struggle of Black Love have to happen first? I hate how to experience this kind of passionate love in fiction, both characters have to go through hell and back to get it. I know life is hard enough, but why does love have to involve pain?

A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness | Progress: Page 179

When I initially started this book, I was a little bored. All this talk of wine, dinner, England, Oxford, and the library and barely any magic or fantasy. But now that I’m a quarter of my way in, it’s getting better!

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo | Progress: 40% done

The audiobook is so good, so deep. Elizabeth’s words and voice are incredible. She really knows how to suck you in with her words and use of language and emotions. Emoni’s story of how much she loves her baby girl is both touching, and I also want to tell her to live her own life. Not just for her daughter, but for herself.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo | Progress: Page 13

I’ll tell you right now, I have no idea what’s going on in this book haha!! I’m very much a few chapters in and I’m kinda confused as to what’s going on. I know there are 2 kids who have special powers or abilities of some sort, but other than that…… I don’t know lol. I might keep going, but if it’s not picking up, I’ll sadly dnf.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng | Progress: 68% done

I’ve caught up with the show version, and it’s so much better than the book. There’s more room for these characters to be fleshed out and show more growth. Making Mia a Black character played by Kerry Washington was the best casting decision because it allows a better understanding of the storyline. The rest of the characters also have their moments to shine on screen more than in the novel. I still haven’t read the whole book, but that’s because I’m too invested in how good the show is.
