Mid-Year Book Freak-Out Tag! // Books I’ve Read, Anticipated and More

Hey guys! Welcome back to my blog. Today I’ll be doing the Mid-Year Freak Out Book Tag, created by Chami @ ReadLikeWildfire and Ely @ Earl Grey Books.

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2020.

It’s a tie between The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Children of Blood and Bone, but in different ways. Evelyn Hugo was an emotional rollercoaster, while CBB was a Black fantasy dream come true!

2. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2020.

I haven’t read a sequel this year, so I’ll skip this one.

3. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo has been sitting on my TBR shelf since its release in May, and I’ve yet to read it. I still need to finish her previous books With the Fire on High and The Poet X.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.
I’m not very good at keeping up with new releases, so I’ll skip this one for now too. Until a new book comes out, at least.

5. Biggest disappointment.

The Chosen Ones by Lisa Luciano was the biggest disappointment for me. I had to DNF it when I’d gotten to the middle of the novel. It was just so boring and I didn’t understand the skating references. It’s supposed to involve a murder mystery, but I felt as if the plot was taking too long to develop.

6. Biggest surprise.

I don’t know if this means the biggest surprise release, or the biggest surprise to read. Either way, I think the biggest surprise release was Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer. After 12 freaking years, a draft leak, and many unanswered questions later, we finally have Twilight in our Edward Cullen’s point of view. I’m only on chapter 4, and it’s so damn good! No spoilers, of course.

7. Favorite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Tayari Jones, who wrote An American Marriage. It’s not a new book, but she’s new to me and I’m sorry it took me so long to get into her writing. She knows how to dig deep into the emotional arc of her characters, while staying simplistic.

8. Newest fictional crush.

I don’t think I’m crushing on any character this year. I feel like if I were to crush on anyone, it’d be Tzain from Children of Blood and Bone. He’s just so cute and so protective of his little sister Zelie; and even though he doesn’t have any magical abilities, he’s still proven to be a very good provider and a family man.

9. Newest favorite character.

Mei from American Panda by Gloria Chao is my precious tiny, shy, insecure, scared, artistic, poetic young baby and nobody better touch her or else…

10. Book that made you cry.

Evelyn Hugo made me tear up and shed some tears. I haven’t cried or sobbed uncontrollably yet over a book, but knowing how my Pisces self reacts to anything emotional, it’s bound to happen.

11. Book that made you happy.

soft magic. by Upile Chisala was a lovely book that made me smile. It’s a poetry book that stems on self-love, acceptance, appreciation of the ones who really love you. Upile’s writing is simplistic and paints colorful pictures of what it means to be a Black woman.

12. Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

It’s a tie between Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer, and With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo. I picked Midnight Sun for the sheer fact that I’m a huge fan of Twilight, and I’ve been waiting for this book since forever, so I’d love the cover no matter what. I also picked With the Fire on High because of the food on the cover; it made me hungry!

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
I don’t really keep TBR lists of books I wish to read anymore because my tastes and habits change so much. But as of now, I keep a list of current books I want to finish by the end of the year, like Midnight Sun; With the Fire on High; An American Marriage by Tayari Jones; and a few others. Those are my main focus for now.
