#IHeartCharactersMeme: Irene from ‘The Sun is Also a Star’ Needs More Screen Time!

My new friend and name-twin, Dani from Perspective of a Writer, has created a new weekly meme to share our favorite characters.

I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani @ Perspective of a Writer to showcase our book blogger love for characters! Each week she’ll supply a topic and you’ll supply the character. Post on whatever day suits you, about characters from whatever media you love (books, movies, K-dramas, television, manga, anime, webtoons, whatever!) and link up on Thursday so YOU and others can blog hop and share the character love. ♡

This week’s topic:  A Minor Character who Needs their own Story (Literally any character you want an expanded story about them…)

I chose Irene from The Sun is Also a Star for sentimental reasons. I felt like her presence in the story was interesting, but we didn’t get to know who she was as a character until the last chapter of the book. Natasha, one of the main protagonists, got to meet her a few times, but they really didn’t talk until the very end, when Natasha saw Daniel, her love interest. So Irene in a way, helped perpetuate the love story, in a sense.

But I want to know why Irene had wanted to die by suicide. There is a small chapter dedicated to her attempt, but that’s it. Who was she? What was her home life like? Why did she hate her job? Where was her family? Did she have friends? Who was she? And I know it’s insensitive of me to even ask why she’d wanted to die, but I still want to know. I wish I could have told her that no worldly issue is worth dying over. No situation is ever that deep to want to die. I just want to give Irene the biggest hug and tell her how important she is, enough to deserve her own story.
