This week’s topic based on the 2018 Booktube SFF (Science Fiction/Fantasy) Awards Book Babble, hosted by Elizabeth from Books and Pieces. I’m not a booktuber, but I still like appreciating favorite urban fantasies of mine! I know these are books I talk about almost daily, and they’re mostly romance-based, but they have some urban fantasy in them too.
For those who don’t know what Top 5 Wednesday is, it’s a weekly book group about our top five favorite things in the middle of the week.

February 28th: Favorite Urban Fantasy Books *Book Babble Crossover Topic* Urban Fantasy tends to feature a heavy romance element, so I figured it fit in this month. The technical urban fantasy definition is: a subgenre of fantasy in which the narrative has an urban setting. Works of urban fantasy are set primarily in the real world and contain aspects of fantasy, such as the discovery of earthbound mythological creatures, coexistence or conflict between humans and paranormal beings, and other changes to city life. A contemporary setting is not strictly necessary for a work of urban fantasy: works of the genre may also take place in futuristic and historical settings, real or imagined.
4. Marked by Fate (Unreality by Ingrid Seymour) – While the whole of Unreality wasn’t 100% all that great, the urban fantasy aspects of it was really good. The female protagonist has psychic abilities within the human world and has to use her abilities to figure out who (or what) killed her mother, as well as a trail of murders in her city.
3. Running in the Dark by Inger Iversen – This book has the coolest Russian vampires, dhampirs (half vampires/half human hybrids) who work as spies, amongst humans who have no idea.
2. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare – Possibly one of the most popular urban fantasies of the past decade! I haven’t read all of the TMI series (hell, I still haven’t read the final book) but I’ll admit that the politics of the Clave, the weapons the Shadowhunters use, the methods they have, is very fascinating in urban fantasy. And some of it is happening in NYC, a big city where a tons of human beings are being watched and protected.
1. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer – Another hugely popular book series! Mind you, it has more paranormal fantasy than urban. But since the vampire/werewolf world sits in a sleepy, rainy human town, with a female human protagonist and her vampire boyfriend, I thought to add it here.
