I’m so excited today because it’s my second hosting day for Bookending Winter 2020!

My hosting week continues with this prompt:

Tuesday 22nd December

Prompt Title: How It Started vs. How It’s Going

Prompt Explanation: Think about when you first picked up a book. How did it start and how has your reading changed since then?

I used to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar with my dad when I was little! Photo: mine

Working in a library this past week has brought back my own memories from when I was really young, and when my dad read books to me before I went to sleep. Children’s books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park, and The Baby-Sitters Club by Ann M. Martin shaped my childhood in the most innocent ways, while still learning about important friendships and relationships.

Now as I’ve grown up and out of certain genres, I’m reading more Young Adult and Adult Romance/Contemporary pieces. I’m also more open to reading fantasy; I’ve never been a big fan of the genre because it’s not one I’m drawn to. But if the story and characters are captivating enough, then the fantasy will naturally come into life for me. I’ve also been adding more diverse reads into my reading, in a more genuine way. Before, I was always rooting for Black and brown authors and stories, but didn’t read much of them because they didn’t seem interesting to pick up. However, I still wanted to root for them because those stories were all people like me and I had. But I’ve found that it’s important to expect more and better from our Black and brown authors as well as whites because that’s how better stories get created.

I’ve also gotten into listening to podcasts about writing and books, like The Worst Bestsellers; Unwritten by Emma Kehl; and The Michelle Obama Podcast. It’s good to hear more people’s perspectives on writing, expanding their craft, and sharing themselves to inspire others. I listen to other podcasts that have nothing to do with writing but more about growing up, becoming a better person.

I also listen to non-bookish podcasts, like The Skorpion Show Podcast, Adventures in Roomating, No Lies Detected, The Zach Sang Show, Slay Girl Slay, Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, and Rants & Randomness with Luvvie Ajayi Jones. Most of these podcasts are either for entertainment or therapeutic purposes.

Comment below! How has your reading journey started, and how has it changed since then?
