My Love/Hate Relationship with Readathons // Am I Reading Too Many Books or Just Being Lazy?!

So if you’ve been following me for a long time, you might know that I love to read. And as much as I love reading and talking about books, I’ve been having a hard time sitting down and getting into a good book, whether for the first time or in the middle of one.

Readathons, reading marathons over a period of time, have been known to be helpful for people who don’t have much time to read. As for me, I’ve been having some difficulty in both finding the right books for challenges, and sticking with them. Which is why I don’t create TBR lists and read on my gut, but that hasn’t been working either.

For example, I had to redo my OWLs for this year’s Magical Readathon, hosted by G @ The Book Roast. My first career was a Librarian, but I couldn’t find books I had liked enough for the History of Magic prompt. The History of Magic prompt was to find a book that was published 10 years ago, and I didn’t want to read Alice in Wonderland or even Harry Potter again. So I’d changed my whole career to Healer, which was easier for me as a reader. But I’d still had trouble sticking to those books I had to read in order to finish my OWLs!!

Now that we’re in August, the NEWTs are a hell of a different beast!! I’m still in the Healer career, but this readathon consists of me reading 10 books within the course of a month. The prompts for this career level are easier, but my god…10 books in a month? Plus I work all week, with only half-hour breaks, so it’s hard to slip in those minutes to read or listen to audiobooks.

I’ve done other readathons too, such as the 24 in 48, The Reading Rush this past week (formerly known as Booktube-A-Thon), and Dewey’s Readathon which is coming this October. Those marathons were easier as well, but they occurred during times where I wasn’t home or at work…Is it a question of me trying on too many hats, or laziness? I know I want to find time to read during these great marathons, but I don’t like feeling tied down by those specific books for a particular week or month. But for now, I guess it’s all about finding that balance between reading what you want and the “deadlines”.
