This week’s topic is A Grump with a Heart of Gold (Characters with rude or disgruntled personalities deserve love too… especially if they thaw towards the MC, eventually.)
I chose good ol’ Peter Van Houten from The Fault in Our Stars. I remember I hated this alcoholic drunk jerkface, both in the movie and book. The book was much worse, because Peter knew that his biggest fan, Hazel Grace Lancaster, wanted to know the ending of her favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. He knew that she wanted the tea on how the book ended, and he just didn’t want to talk. It wasn’t until the end of the book that Peter finally told her how the story ends. But it was too late; Hazel was already in her feelings. At least Peter came back to try to give her what she wanted. It shows a bit of sincerity. Also, we got to see how cancer had affected him personally, when his daughter had died of it. I felt bad for him in that moment, even though I hated the way he treated Hazel Grace and Augustus.
