March 28: Favorite Teachers/Mentors — Typically, we read about our protagonist being taught by someone wiser than they, whether is it is a teacher as we know them or more of a supernatural/magical mentor. Talk about some of your favorites! p.s. For the love of god please do not choose Harry Potter characters that is just TOO EASY 🙂
So no Professors Dumbledore, McGonagall, Sirius Black, Lupin, Lockhart, Sprout, or Madame Pomphrey? Dammit Sam! lol but ok, here are some of my favorite non-Harry Potter teachers and mentors.
4. Haymitch Abernathy (The Hunger Games series) – Haymitch was more of a drunk bastard in the beginning in the series, but as the series carried on, he became somewhat of a mentor for Katniss and Peeta to figure out how to win the Games.
3. Four (Divergent series) – I’m breaking the rules by including a love interest as a teacher, but he was also both. People forget that Four was first Tris’ Dauntless initiation instructor. He just happened to fall in love with her in the process of saving Chicago from Erudite’s destruction.
2. Reid Wentworth (Anomaly duology by Tonya Kuper) – Same rules apply here! Reid was first Josie’s Anomaly trainer who fell in love with her later on. Yes, I know teacher-student relationships are bad, but here, they’re so cute! And realistic, because they started out as friends first then mostly fell more in love in the sequel, Enigma. Reid didn’t baby Josie while training her; he saw her potential and her power and intensified it with his methods.
1. Hiroshi Matsumoto (Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman) – Hiroshi was possibly the sweetest, most open, friendly teacher for Kiko to have. He’s like your favorite uncle! He didn’t really teach Kiko anything new, more like showed her new ways to expand on her passion for art.
