November 29th: Authors You’d Want to Write Like
–In honor of NaNo wrapping up, discuss some authors you’d like to write like. Whether its their writing style, what genre they write in, or how many books they manage to churn out a year!
5. Inger Iversen (In the Dark) – I’ve only read one book by her, but I love how she fused attitude with fantasy within her characters and I wish I could write like that.
4. Akemi Dawn Bowman (Starfish) – I’m an emotional person, so I didn’t think I could figure out ways to combine emotions, thoughts and feelings of anxiety in a way that’s understandable in literature. But the way Akemi does it is so crisp and clear and wide open, even to people who don’t have anxiety. Her writing style is so beautiful and relatable; I wish I could write like her.
3. Sheena Hutchinson (Discovering April) – Another author who knows how to fuse emotion in literature! But Sheena also adds a lot of sarcasm and humor, which is something I love.
2. Stephenie Meyer (Twilight) – The mother of all things YA! Personally, I think her writing style is very basic, but it’s simple and easy to get through. She’s an author who knows she’s not top-notch and doesn’t try to be; she just is! Her world building is also way easy to understand, which is good if you don’t like complex world building.
1. J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter) – The mother of all things Potter! Since she’s British and I’m American, I obviously can’t write like her. Especially since there are so many American terms that just wouldn’t fit into a British series and still sound eloquent. But I wish I had her eye for authentic characterization and world building. Also, she’s an author that does not back down. She was rejected 12 times by many publishers who didn’t understand her story. But she’d finally found Scholastic and the rest is history! I don’t want to write like her, I just wanna be her!
